![]() Pros: Better visibility, more compact, firmer rug texture.Ĭons: More physically demanding, can be slowerįinally, the last loom I want to cover in this post is the upright floor loom. They also take up a lot of space! So they may not be a feasible option for everyone. I would recommend starting out with a table loom first to make sure you get the hang of it. One downside of working on a floor loom is that they take a while to set up, and for beginner weavers they can be tricky to master. If you’re in the UK I recommend looking at Gumtree, eBay or The Loom Exchange for second-hand looms. This loom is no longer in production but you can get similar looms, either new or second hand. It’s really well-built and the ratchet and pawl mechanisms on the warp and cloth beams allow me to increase the tension of the warp and hold it firm. The loom in the photo above is a 40-year old Harris floor loom. I have a second-hand Fanny II from LeClerc and have woven many rugs on it.īut the type of floor looms I really recommend are ones that are solidly constructed. But you can use a floor loom with a foldable back beam. You can get smaller floor looms which fold up, but I would avoid a fully foldable loom, as there’s always a danger that it will collapse under pressure. There’s a huge array of these looms available from brands like LeClerc, Harrisville, Glimakra, and Toika to name a few, and they come in many different sizes. If you want to weave rugs on a larger scale and on a faster timeline, I recommend trying a floor loom. Verdict: A good starting point for more advanced rug weaving.Ĭons: Longer set up time, complexity, takes up space. So for larger scale projects, you are better off looking at a floor loom. The warp and cloth beams are not large enough to fit a long length of woven rug. The one downside to these table looms is that you are limited in terms of how wide your rug can be- and how long it can be too. You want them to be sturdy & solid, strong enough to withstand the tension needed to weave a rug. The key thing to look for in a table loom is the size and strength of the metal cogs which hold the warp and cloth beams in place. ![]() ![]() The shafts can be raised and lowered to lift the warp and this speeds up the weaving process considerably. Looms like the Harris Table Loom are relatively simple to set up for the first time but allow you to weave a longer rug overall. If you don’t want to stretch for a floor loom just yet but want to experiment with shafts and beams, table looms are a great starting point. Verdict: Best to avoid if you want to weave rugs. If you want to weave rugs on a horizontal warp, I recommend looking at table or floor looms. Secondly, the cogs on most rigid heddles are not strong enough to maintain the tension needed for rug weaving, and the looms themselves are not sturdy enough to withstand the pressure of a heavy rug warp. They are brilliant starter looms, but I don’t recommend them for rug weaving.įirstly, these looms are designed for fine, close-spaced warps, so most of the heddles that are sold with them do not fit the heavier warp used for rugs. These looms are primarily designed to weave cloth, although some textile artists like Hannah Waldron use them to weave tapestry too. They allow you to weave a longer length of fabric than a frame loom, and the heddle separates the warp to make it easier to pass the weft through and beat it down. Rigid heddle looms are very popular these days. Pros: Great for weaving cloth or tapestry- but not rugsĬons: Tension issues, limited flexibility for warp, not sturdy enough. Verdict: A great starter loom, ideal for the online course. This continuous loop can also be moved around the loom, allowing greater adjustability so it’s less physically demanding to weave on.įinally, this is the loom I use to demonstrate my techniques on throughout my Rug Weaving online course! These techniques will translate onto almost any loom, but I do recommend this loom for the course, especially if you’re a beginner weaver. However this loom is limited in terms of the size of the rug you can weave, although it is possible to warp it in a continuous loop and weave a rug that is twice as long! I cover how to do this in my Rug Weaving online course. ![]() These separate the warp, making it easier to pass the weft across the loom and speeding up the weaving process. It's very simple to set up, and it comes with a heddle rod and shed stick. Of course, I’d be remiss in this post if I didn’t mention my own rug loom! I designed this loom especially for beginners, and for use in my own weaving workshops and online course. Pros: Simple to set up, shed stick and heddle rod.

It takes cues from its source material but isn't chained down, unwilling to tweak the gameplay or toy with expectations. Outside of its annoying boss battles, Castle of Illusion never wanders too close to the unforgiving nature or archaic design of retro platformers. News Corp Australia has denied it played a part in Grant’s decision to stand down from hosting Q+A and has accused Stevens of misleading and unsubstantiated claims.King Charles III's coronation, as it happened Much of the commentary about the ABC across News Corp characterised the coronation coverage as dominated by Grant’s “successive tirades” and the “black armband” view of history. More than three-quarters related to the interruption of Vera and other complaints were about other matters, such as the duration of the coverage. ![]() In 2021 the ABC received more than 400 complaints over its coverage of Prince Philip’s death after the breaking news on a Friday night interrupted an episode of the much-loved TV show Vera. The Australian has suggested the number of complaints about the ABC’s coronation coverage was “completely unheard of”. Only complaints which involve the ABC’s editorial policies, and relate to issues of such as bias, accuracy, impartiality and diversity of perspectives, are investigated by the ABC ombudsman, Fiona Cameron. “The ABC does not consider racist and abusive interactions as being good faith complaints, and we believe it is inappropriate for other media to report them as being good faith complaints,” an ABC spokesperson told Guardian Australia.Ĭomplaints not requiring a response are complaints in which viewers wish to relay a comment but they don’t ask for a response or an investigation. The ABC denies it was “swamped” with complaints about the coronation coverage. In The Chaser’s case the program – in which children playing terminally ill patients were told their Make-a-Wish-style requests were excessive – was found to have breached editorial standards and apologies and demotions followed. The 59 referrals is a relatively small number when compared with some of the more contentious ABC programs over the years including The Chaser’s “Make a Realistic Wish” skit in 2009, which had 2,000 legitimate complaints investigated for editorial compliance. Some included programming matters, including the timing of when the coronation panel was scheduled. The remaining 110 good faith complaints of the 169 were not related to possible editorial breaches and will not be referred to the ombudsman. Guardian Australia understands senior executives at the ABC acknowledge it may have been a mistake to schedule the discussion so close to the coronation, but do not resile from the discussion itself. The discussion panel was one hour within eight hours of the coronation broadcast and was programmed to ensure the Indigenous perspective on the crown was discussed. ![]() Stevens said sections of the media engaged in a “piling on” with “a clear agenda” and that they played a part in “amplifying and giving agency” to racist trolls on social media. Last week the director of ABC News, Justin Stevens, took aim at the “usual sections of the media” for stirring up hate by distorting Grant’s contribution to the debate when he appeared on the coronation coverage panel, which was hosted by Jeremy Fernandez and Julia Baird. The number of “good faith” complaints – defined as those which are an honest complaint about the content – has emerged after journalist Stan Grant stood down from the ABC’s Q+A program after racist abuse which escalated after he appeared on the coronation broadcast. Sign up for Guardian Australia’s free morning and afternoon email newsletters for your daily news roundup According to the ABC’s official figures, the total number of audience contacts about the eight-hour coronation broadcast was 1,832 but 1,663 of those were discarded because they were comments not requiring a response – such as criticism of a presenter’s outfit – or they were “racist, abusive or insubstantial”. ![]() Palatinus 1525 (= B) in bibliotheca Vaticana, charta-Ĭeus 5 formae maximae, saec. Having character portrait options is very good but the actual game still looks basically like the PSP version, albeit at a higher resolution. Star Ocean: First Departure R plays great and mostly looks great, too. It also isn’t a very long JRPG or a very good one on either PS4 or Nintendo Switch but I’m always happy when older games that aren’t available digitally are brought to modern systems. The game feels the same on both systems when docked but being able to also play it on the go on Switch makes this version better. If you’re wondering whether Star Ocean: First Departure R is worth buying on PS4 over Nintendo Switch, I’ve enjoyed it a lot more on Nintendo Switch. Having looked at some footage of the original release for Star Ocean, those environments look like they would scale up to HD displays better. The environment could’ve used some touching up because while the characters look nice even while moving, the environment looks very dated. The font doesn’t scale well in general from the PSP version to this remaster but in handheld mode, some of the alphabets don’t even look as they should. In handheld mode, it suffers from an annoying issue relating to the font choice. On Nintendo Switch, Star Ocean: First Departure R doesn’t make use of the touchscreen at all. I was hoping there would be some major quality of life improvements. If you already played this on PSP, I wouldn’t recommend getting this version just for new voice acting and portrait options. In terms of content, those are the only major additions to this release. In addition to English voice acting, you can also play the game with the Japanese PSP voice acting or a new Japanese audio track specially done for Star Ocean: First Departure R. ![]() The other big addition is in voice acting. Sadly, cutscenes don’t reflect the different portraits. In addition to the original PSP character art, there’s a new portrait option available. Star Ocean: First Departure R includes everything from the PSP release and has some nice extras. While it succeeds in being an authentic take on the PSP game with some nice additions, the game needed a bit more to be worth recommending to all right now. Star Ocean: First Departure R is a remaster of a PSP remake of the first Star Ocean game for PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Ever since that hit PS4, Square Enix has slowly been bringing more of the older games to current platforms. Square Enix’s Star Ocean franchise is something I had been wanting to check out for a while and I finally gave it a shot through Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness which was something I did not enjoy at all. ![]() Originally released in 2008 on PSP and then brought to PS4 and Nintendo Switch with additional content. In the Netherlands, the Germans advanced the local time by one hour and 40 minutes, changing the time in Amsterdam from “Dutch Time” to CEST. The practice was implemented again during World War II by the Germans, who spread it to many countries under Nazi occupation, including Denmark and Poland. However, they returned back to standard time after the war, with Daylight Saving Time relegated to a wartime phenomenon. Seeing sense in the idea, other countries across Europe began to adopt the same practice. This was two years into World War I, and the logic was to reduce the use of artificial lighting, to save fuel and energy for the war effort. The first countries to utilise Daylight Saving Time were Germany and Austria, who both implemented the policy on April 30, 1916. Various other regions in Canada soon followed their example, starting with Winnipeg and Brandon in 1916. Canada was the first to change the clocksĭaylight Saving Time was first actually implemented in a region of Canada, when the residents of Port Arthur, Ontario, decided in 1908 to shift their clocks to make better use of the daylight hours during spring and summer. Although there was interest in all of these ideas, they were never followed through. Later, in 1895, New Zealand scientist George Vernon Hudson proposed changing the clocks by two hours every spring, to give him more daylight hours to collect and examine insects. In 1907 British builder William Willett suggested implementing a clock shift to save energy. Then, after the advent of the pendulum clock and other more accurate timekeeping devices, in 1784 the polymath Benjamin Franklin proposed the idea of moving waking hours to align better with daylight hours. In a satirical letter to The Journal of Paris, he suggested people should wake up earlier in summer to save money on candles and lamp oil. The Romans used the flow of water to measure time, and their scales were adjusted throughout the year according to the position of the earth around the sun. ![]() It may surprise you to know that the idea of setting the time forward and back with the fluctuations of the seasons and daylight actually has a very long history. Where does Daylight Saving Time come from? Throughout the rest of the year, the CET time zone is observed in the Netherlands, which is just one hour ahead of UTC. During these months, the Netherlands is two hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Like many countries across Europe, the Netherlands has two time zones: Central European Time (CET) and Central European Summer Time (CEST).Īs the name would suggest, CEST is observed between the end of March and the end of October, when daylight savings is in effect. How does DST affect the Netherlands' time zone? In 2023, this means the clocks are going forward on March 26, and will go back on October 29. These changes occur annually on the last weekends in March (when the clocks go forward by one hour) and October (when the clocks go back by one hour and daylight savings comes to an end). This means that twice a year, people across the country dutifully set their clocks forward and back one hour. Love it or hate it, the fact remains that Daylight Savings Time (DST) is also practised in the Netherlands. So we ask, why do we change the clocks twice a year, and will this practice continue forever? Daylight Savings: Does the time change in the Netherlands? ![]() It's been this way for so long that almost nobody questions it, but to expats who might have different experiences in their home countries, it can be the source of some confusion. Every year in March and October, people in the Netherlands and around the world set their clocks forward and back one hour. ![]() We can find the dress shirt in the racist room beside the hanging corpse after getting the key from Evrart.
